CAHSEE Results

The California Department of Education released new results for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). This year, a greater percentage of the class of 2007 have passed the CAHSEE than for the class of 2006 last year. Overall, more minority and poor students are passing the CAHSEE, although the gaps between their passing rate and that of their Asian and white peers aren’t closing fast enough.

Probably the most interesting thing to me was that almost half of the students who hand’t passed the test by graduation day, kept trying.

Of about 40,000 students who failed the mandatory California High School Exit Examination last year, about 45% have enrolled for a fifth year of high school or an adult education program, according to new figures from the California Department of Education. About 4,800 passed after taking the test once more.

I think that is awesome news. Not only are students taking their studies more seriously and schools are spending more time working with students lacking these basic skills, but for those students who don’t pass the test, many see the importance of continuing to work on acquiring the skills they need to be successful in life.
